Anti-Zoom Clothes

The half you don't get to see.

One good thing about this year: the sales continue to be unreal. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t share all the fun printed pants and skirts I feel like I am stealing from websites! Of course statement earrings, necklaces, and jewel-toned shirts paired with pajama pants is the “Zoom look of today.” But what about tomorrow? But what about the days when you can’t just throw a headband on with a college sweatshirt and call that dressing up? I know I’m going to live to see the end of this Pandemic so I am being a smart shopper and scoring my party/office essentials now...at 50% off clearance price. (I wear my fun night clothes to work with a cardigan for coverage because it puts me in a good mood.)

Now of course, this is our little secret because if too many people stock up on their Anti-Zoom clothes then the sales will dwindle. Buying a season or maybe even a year before you plan to wear a piece always runs the risk of: will this still be in style when I can wear it? So I’ve composed some tips on bottoms to buy today that won’t look dated when going out in public is finally encouraged.

Timeless=A Safe Bet: Since the Gold Rush there’s never been a time when jeans were less attractive. And that’s why now’s the time to scoop a fresh pair. It’s crazy how adding a new pair of jeans to your closet can automatically refresh your looks. Whether you’re looking to try a new leg shape or want to invest in one quality pair to wear each weekend of the next decade, start your search now! Go for more “novelty” colors that are still wearable each and every year like black, wine, emerald, and charcoal. The nonessential denim colors are discounted even more.

Buy Now, Wear Now: Maybe as soon as you buy something you can’t resist wearing it. That’s cool. As retailers make room for new spring goods stock up on Feb. friendly pieces like velvet maxi skirts and floral corduroy joggers. Hint: any bottoms in a loud print, luxe embellishment, or a heavier fabric will be the most on sale. Most people are not wearing a pearl encrusted tulle skirt now because it doesn’t show up on Zoom. But who wants to be most people? I am starting Suede Skirt Saturdays to make an occasion for getting dressed in my new purchases! By the time other people will see me in my skirt collection, I’ll already be certain of the best way to style it. Consider this the time to “practice” getting dressed. Brainstorm, flesh out ideas, and discover unexpected takes on old and new clothing favorites.

You have no idea how many outfits I have queued up with my new cord joggers.

Jumpsuits and rompers are the perfect collaborators! Meaning they merge your needs for fashion and comfort. Right now all rompers in stock are likely ones the stores never got a chance to put out during the shutdown last spring. If the price is right, stick to core patterns that never do you wrong: polka dots, vertical pinstripes, checked, and florals. Layer tights or a turtleneck under a sleeveless jumpsuit or romper to make them year round. More on jumpsuits can be found here.

Stock Up on Skirts: The ultimate clearance pricing right now is on one of my all time favorite product categories: skirts! It is hard for me to put into words why I love skirts so much but here it goes. Sure, you can get creative with shoes, accessories, and wraps but there aren’t infinite ways to style a dress, unlike a skirt. Wrap skirts alone can be more versatile than cooking with eggs. I love playing with the hems and waistlines. Covering with tall, tall boots in the cold months and little slide on sandals when the sun shines.

Skirts are stars.

Skirts are looked at as a piece from yesteryears, that cover the forgotten half of the body. Just like parties, restaurants, and movie theaters - they’ll come back. I shop for skirts with extra special details that aren’t found on pants. Embroidery is a great way to add detail. Skirts don’t have to be a one and done fast fashion item either. DIY patchwork made skirts with blocks of alternating prints and colors is the perfect way to upcycle fabric.

What a time we live in where ornate clothing is more affordable than a sweatsuit. Dress better, save money.
