Snow Boots in the Streets

Ready for more than just sleet storms, let snow boots help you climb rocks and slosh through puddles.

It’s time to face the music: snow boots are too pretty to be buried. And this rather snow-less season is the perfect one to demonstrate this phenomenon. Allow me to explain.

The world is your runway. Why categorize it? Why restrict your most quality pair of shoes for one specific weather forecast that is a possibility for only a quarter of the year? That’s crazy talk! Snow boots are the double threat boot: too pretty to be buried and too comfy to be taken off inside. So, it is safe to say wearing snow boots on a snowless street is so of the moment.

Style Points: First thing’s first - wearing snow boots on a day above 32 degrees will make you look like the most creative chick on the block. Snow boots as a style piece makes sense because they are clunky and thick-soled (one “c,” thanks) like the Bob Saget sneaks but, less in your face. This lower brow trend item has more life to it than an in-your-face ugly sneaker. Courreges Spring 2020 show in Paris, shows off a white tongue-tied lace boot with a rubber orange platform sole. Proving red bottoms aren’t the only color that can lie beneath the foot.

If you’re in the market for a brand new pair of snow boots, somehow the lightest color makes the loudest statement. Picture the Michelin man (you know the marshmallow-looking tire guy?) but from the ankles down and with a velcro closure around the side. Remind you of the puffy boots that got handed down to you in the 90s? Same thing this go-around just hold the character patches and the pastels, ‘cause now you’re more grown-up than the Rugrats. Snow boots that emulate the ever-trendy combat boot that lace ready for duty, are also an item to pick up from your typical outdoor gear providers. Swap the laces for ribbon to show your softer flirty side.

All beige gives each piece a sense of belonging.

When buying online, I always opt for a snow boot that shows some faux fur sticking out of the top for two reasons. 1. With the added fur around the circumference of the boot, it will make it tighter around my calf and therefore, less likely for snow to pile in (in the rare event of a snowstorm, that is.) 2. If the fur on the outside looks luscious just imagine the cotton cloud you’ll be walking on on the inside. Which brings me to how much more functional snow boots are than your kitten heel thigh-highs and your square toe booties.

A Practical Pick: Anyone ever trip over your own feet? Anyone ever fall up the steps? Yeah...not in snow boots. Thanks to ma girl traction, you’ll stay vertical at all times. With stability rooted in the ground transferring to mid-calf, snow boots share several qualities with their richer, woodsy cousin, hiking boots; such as, ankle security.

Exploration, adventure, and a firm stance!

I know I am suggesting white which makes people worried about stains from mud, bar goo, chewed gum and the like. Fear not! The weather-proof nature of a true snow boot makes them easy to clean with a damp paper towel. Also, I am starting to wear my snow boots in lieu of rain boots on damp days because the fur lining doesn’t put me at risk for blisters like a rubber rain boot does. These days comfort is key.

Making Outfits with Snow Boots: Worried about it looking like you misread the forecast? Here are some ensemble pairings that show you know you don’t have to shovel the walk. Generally speaking, when I create a look I want it to be on the verge of balanced and juxtaposed. A rugged snow bootie in a neutral tone stands out against a flowy midi-length dress or skirt plus cardigan twin set in a feminine print like thick stripes, polka dots, or light florals. I also love snow boots as a high-class swap out for work boots. Wear with cutoffs, a hat, a big sweatshirt...whatever worn clothing you’d wear to do a tough job.

I added a cabled J. Crew sweater to smooth out this look into something more me.

By nature, snow boots play well with camo print since they were both first designed for outside. I have a pair of camo cargo pants I couldn’t have made it through the last five years without. The rest of the world is just catching on.

Elsa didn’t want to build a snowman but, I’m sure the ice queen wouldn’t mind keeping her snow boots on a few extra days out of the year.

It takes a good self image to wear chunky boats any day, especially no snow days! Keep walking knowing who you are! You are who you think you are in your heart!! You are terrific!!
