Make-up custom shopped for your face, groceries delivered by drones, these days there is a subscription service for everything. If you express the slightest bit of interest, in a bracelet of the month club, that company will hunt you down until you are on their VIP subscribers list. Considering America’s infatuation with getting items delivered to their doors, I couldn’t help but wonder why magazines are decreasing their circulation and turning digital?
Of course, when I am in need of specific advice, I go directly to a publication’s website and use the search bar. I don’t need a subscription to Runner’s World to learn how to care for shin splints but, if I did have a subscription, maybe I could have learned how to prevent shin pain instead. One only seeks out the things they think they need and the things they think they are interested in.
Did I think I needed to know what my favorite dipping sauce says about my taste in bad boys? Absolutely not! But when I saw it in my Cosmo subscription I was more than ready to face the ranch reality. Now that’s entertainment.
I highly recommend discountmags.com for the best savings on your subscription! For as low as a $1 an issue, magazines make reading an inexpensive passive learning activity. Magazine’s lightweight take-me-anywhere body makes ‘em great for all your 2019 adventures; from picnics to plane rides. Okay, but which one should I get?
Cosmo: What used to be regarded as on-the-verge of porn, is now the Millennial magazine (go figure.) Infact, as part of its rebranding Cosmopolitan might want to reconsider changing its name to White Claw.
I regard myself as a unique person. Someone who is ahead in terms of fashion and lagging in terms of tech but, man, does this magazine have me pegged. Every title and little call-out is written with the voice of a close friend telling me to get it together (which is hopefully how you feel reading my blog.) The header of the fashion section in the October issue reads: “Excuse me, I’m not ready to be done with my summer clothes yet.” We feel you, girl.
All I want in life is to save time, look fly, be loved, and eat good food and Cosmo helps me get closer to these goals every month. Kettle chips on Caesar salad instead of croutons? Genius. How to get that second date? Potentially life changing. This magazine has more entertainment power in its newly expanded Astrology section than most comedians. Get it on your iPad sure, but I’m telling you, you’re gonna want the real subscription, poolside.
Harper’s Bazaar: My first, my last, my everything. Since 1867, Harper’s Bazaar has remained one of the strongest selections among the Hearst media. I love checking out all their photos; the spreads are shot in the most stunning locations. The styling is out there, after all, fashion magazines are created for inspiration, not duplication. In Harper’s Bazaar the outfits are more wearable than runway-focused Vogue.
I got an issue of Harper’s Bazaar on my desk every month when I interned for Dallas Shaw and ever since, this has been my preferred fashion magazine. “The Grand Bazaar,” must-have pieces and the looking “Fabulous At Every Age” are among my favorite staple articles. Most articles are only a few sentences - it's really about the photos and the styling. Plus the magazine is organized in chapters just like a novel. Super cute.
Vogue: Vogue defines fashion. It is as simple as that. Anyone with the slightest interest in looking well-dressed or anyone who keeps up with the media knows who Anna Wintour is. Vogue leads readers to their next move - they won’t spell it out for you, and this is not for everyone. Vogue is goddess of the runway therefore, to enjoy this publication, you must appreciate designers and understand how to interpret looks to make wearable. I use Vogue as research constantly. Vogue is the science of fashion. *Drops mic*
Food Network Magazine: I’m just gonna say it. I love to eat. And as a variety-seeking American, I can only cook so many meals from Pinterest because, after I pin one recipe with parmesan brussel sprouts, that’s my whole dang feed.
Since I am always hungry, I don’t like to take a lot of time cooking - especially after work. Food Network Magazine’s “Weeknight Cooking” section has great recipes for 4 people with a cook time of 40 min. or less. If I make one of these fun recipes a week, I stow the leftovers for my lunches.
The reason I am able to make so many things from this magazine is the ingredients list is low and if I don’t have a spice, I can normally find something in my cabinet to replace it with. Also each issue has an insert of 50 ways to use a certain ingredient or make a certain food. More. Cheese. Please. I love the Food Network channel but since I spend my money on shoes and not cable, this magazine is the next best thing.
Runner’s World: As far as health and fitness magazines go, there are a ton of options! Personally, I think everyone should try running at some point in their lives. It is one of the few physical activities that can be done anywhere with zero equipment. Running is just you. How empowering?
Runner’s World provides expertise for those going to Boston all the way to those trying to survive their first 5k. As an avid runner, I often use Runner’s World’s training plans as a guide to hit my desired time. Before my first half marathon I had all these questions about the right way to fuel my body for longer mileage and I turned to runnersworld.com where I had viewed too many articles and now needed the subscription. Lots of interesting tips on sleeping and where to run too.
Make someone’s day every month by surprising them with a little magazine subscription!
Happy reading!
