I’ll admit it. Chasing trends can be exhausting. In 2020 there is less guidance than ever before in the fashion realm. Street style is nonexistent, runway shows are more exclusive, and pages in magazines have decreased. However, as we gear up for the holiday season and dive full force into fall fashion I am here to guide you in terms of what to buy, wear, and recycle. It is time to wear something new!
How long will items be in style? In order of never again to timeless.
Chunky Sneakers: This trend was 100% made only for Instagram and I loathe desperate showiness to impress others. How or why Bob Saget was ever seen as a style icon is above me. It is like people didn’t see him Windexing away his Full House. If you crave retro sneaks, opt for a more sleek, fitted option that does not make your foot look as big as Shrek’s. Normally when a trend goes to one extreme, (ex. giant footwear) it then goes to the other - more form-fitting. I’m into Coach’s Baylee logo suede piped sneakers of the early 2000s. For a colorful option, I also support the comeback of Puma’s.
Slip dress: Let’s face it: we can’t all be a shift dress. I remember the first time I wore an olive slip dress to a party cleverly paired with a long necklace to accentuate my leanness. The year was 2015 - that was a while ago. I mean, look how much has happened in the past five years! A slip dress has been at the forefront of fashion for the latter part of the 2010s because the layering options are endless! A slip dress is a true blank canvas - so many ways to wear it. But even a good Swift song overplayed on the radio gets old. (Don’t deny you never got bored of Love Story.) If you think you can conjure up a new way to wear a slip dress by all means, but if it's just a basic black and white Rachel Green look, it’s time for a more shapely silhouette.
Bell sleeves: Personally, I find that bell sleeves flatter everyone! Sleeve interest is a great way to add embellishment to an otherwise one dimension shirt or dress body. Though I will always love a cascading ruffle, there is a fresh take on sleeve interesting that is both twice as daring as it is alluring. Think of a baseball tee, but the chest and the sleeves are completely different patterns and materials. Also, the sleeves are full-length - not three quarters. I.E. a cotton t-shirt with plaid flannel sleeves or a LBD with lilac silk sleeve. This new trend can mold to your style. A true beauty.
Over the Knee Boots: I find my suede over-the-knee boots as a comfy alternative to stockings (and perhaps the only way I can wear a dress in the winter without turning into a popsicle). Though there are many boot trends, the latest and greatest for 2020 are straight, not slouchy, heeled, not flat, and hit just below the knee; a length we haven’t seen since riding boots. A luxe black leather with a walkable heel will be the new shape to watch. Net-A-Porter has stellar boot inspo right now, which I highly recommend drooling over.
Backpacks: No longer just the tiny ones, suddenly all backpacks are cool and here’s why. With all the travel bans, even a trek to the local park seems like an adventure. And I hope that if this blog has taught you anything it is, you always have to be accessorized appropriately. The fact of the matter is backpacks hold the most stuff in the most convenient way! Would I take the ‘ole Jansport to the grocery store just to carry my phone/wallet/keys? Doubtful. But the option is out there. (9th grade me is regretting stuffing all my books into a metallic tote bag for street cred.)
Scrunchies: What seemed like a fleeting trend powered by pure nostalgia has actually proven to withhold the test of time. There are a million ways to both design and wear scrunchies, with no end in sight. At first, the return of scrunchies was subtle. People mainly sported solid tone scrunchies, barely bigger than a traditional hair tie. Do the most with a massive floral scrunchie in a silky fabric. Scrunchies unapologetically encourage you to grow out your hair.
Puffer jackets: Does snuggling go out of style? No. No, it does not. Like Jake from State Farm, a puffer jacket will always be there for you. A puffer is normally seen as less desirable than say, a trench coat but newsflash! Functional athleisure is here to stay! Looking like you just went skiing...kind of a vibe right now. (More on the hottest coats of 2021 here.) Fashion is for looks, fashion is for expression, and fashion is for comfort. It is up to you to balance the three.
