I’d be remiss if I didn’t come clean about something. My favorite outfits of all time are rather simple. (Shocking, I know!) Topping the charts: bikini, sunglasses, flip-flops, baseball cap, baggy tank top – mix in sand and water. But, a close and rather different second: the coziest pull-on sweater I can get my hands on, a cute little skirt, and boots either solid and tall or printed and stout. Thanks to Global Warming, true sweater weather starts on Thanksgiving (in the Northeast, at least) with textured knits in the same colors as our feast. Cashmere Crew: A cashmere crew with a wool mini skirt says I’m sweet as potatoes. Proven: a plaid or argyle mini skirt for fall makes no sense (in general) to men. Fuzzy and warm and yet small? Maybe you’ll catch some aren’t you cold side-eyes wearing a mini skirt at the end of November but 1.) You’ll likely be at the couch or the dinner table, both indoors near a hot oven and 2.) I have a few remedies. Tights are the obvious solution but, I swear by over-the-knee boots for a comfy leg covering alternative.
Collared Sweater: Dark denim has the same chameleon like effect as “work pants,” and is therefore considered dress-up material. I don’t make the rules! Grab your stretchiest dark jeans (‘cause stuffing and pie) and pair with a collared sweater. Tuck in to be as classy as Annie James.
Knit Sweater Separates: If you have one of those trendy families an identical raised cable knit duo is a must! Keep the conversation off politics and on how fabulous it is that you found the perfect sweater skirt. Wear with Wisdom: same yarn, same weight sweater top and skirt but in opposite ends of the color wheel for a blocking effect.
Legging-Length Sweater: Tunic length tops and sweaters that cover about a third of your thigh are perhaps the most desirable because they are the perfect length to wear with leggings! Pair a tunic sweater with printed pants or denim? Yes, it can be totally cool to wear over real pants, (if you find a way to make them look non-bulky and accessorize accordingly, but that’s a topic for another day) but really, the easy option is to simply wear the long sweater as intended. Loose cowl necks and waffle knits are dominating the market proving, comfort does not have to equal sloppy. For kicks combine traditional and trendy with a cranberry sauce colored structured knee-high boot.
Fringe Poncho: Brace yourselves for the perfect outfit option for an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner. Ponchos were literally made to keep you as warm as if you have a blanket attached to your chest. Go for 70s power in a striped acrylic fringe-lined poncho. The 1970s are becoming the 1990s. What I mean by that: in 2021 you’ll see ‘70s inspired fashions more than any other decade. Might as well give thanks early.
Buttoned Cardigan: Most people wear cardigans as an extra layer- when wanting to dress up their look. Most people wear a zip-up hoodie when wanting to dress down their look. But what about in between? A cardigan with sweatpants...for (quarantine) Thanksgiving. Hear me out. Button the cardigan completely with maybe only one or two top buttons open for comfort. Keep the bottom buttons buttoned so avoid looking like you’re busting out. Choose a slouchy cardigan in a heavier fabric because in this case, it will be acting as your top. Undershirts are for amateurs. Layer necklaces for confidence. I have a baby pink faux rabbit hair cardigan with diamond shaped buttons that looks fire with light grey sweats and platform sneakers. Because sometimes I can’t decide whether to go heels or sneakers. You know?
