Street Style is Beach Style

Salt-air smiles. The Julia's are back on the blog!

Underwear as outerwear. Pajamas as couture. It feels as though there is nothing we haven’t seen before on the streets of the big cities. Now we turn our attention to another one of our favorite people-watching spots. The beach! Street Style may be in um, hibernation but Beach Style is crashing on in. It’s more than just comparing Target and Aerie swimwear of seasons past but, rather about the full summertime look.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that I may go for the ocean but, I stay to examine the bathing suits on all walks of life that surround me. This year, the beach is perhaps the most public place with a seemingly unlimited capacity. Here are the styles to peep out from under the umbrella for.

City signage, beach babe.

The last few seasons swimwear that mimics everyday clothing trends have caught major heat. Particularly in the bodysuit-turned-one-piece swimsuit category. If you aren’t sure how to make a walk to the dunes a runway strut, your easiest move: a solid halter one piece suit and a flowy sarong. Fill in the open chest space this v-neck style creates with some gold chains. How do people look glamorous in the humid salt air you ask? They tame their flyaways and they add jewelry. Just look at the Peloton instructors! They look effortless in their workout gear yet, very noticeably, have their hair and makeup done and always have on a few pieces of jewelry. Contrary to popular belief, for beach jewelry I recommend something on the nicer side so it doesn’t rust in the salt air. (Plus, I have a full collection of waveproof bracelets, anklets, and chokers but, that’s beside the point.)

Also, remember when I got us all into crocheted pieces in late March? The texture craze cements itself in the form of bikini tops. Since there are no music festivals, naturally all we want to do is go to festivals. As we wait for things to fully open, channel that Woodstock energy with a crocheted fringe bikini top and your most lightweight flowy pants. This look was meant for bare feet.

Can't talk, doing rich girl poses.

The best place to test out that see-through dress trend is the beach! You’ll feel less exposed with a bathing suit showing underneath and not your actual underwear. White eyelet coverup dresses work well with a structured bikini consisting of high hip bottoms and a square neck top. Fabric-wise bathing suits are small so every stitch gone into making them helps craft a shape. These are the trendiest two for ‘21.

Bikini tops featuring a center tie command attention. Layer your swim top under your jean jacket or your best summer bomber when striding along the coast at nighttime. One piece’s with dual side-ruched ties have the same effect and can even be worn with an oversized blazer, cutoffs, and sandals for an ocean-front dinner.

Prints, neutrals, and cold hard cash.

Swimwear with ruffled sleeves may not seem practical but, when done in a more subtle bibb-lettuce type way (Yes, even produce can inspire a look.) it just works. Take this as your opportunity to create a printed skirt and color-coordinating bikini set that’s straight out of 2003’s The Simple Life. Add a cardigan and platform flip-flops to the set for max nostalgia.

You’ll see more on a crowded beach this summer than a street corner in any major city. I guarantee. Report back your findings.

Say bye to dirty park benches and hello to sandy lounge chairs.
