Long enough to cover your thighs, but short enough to show off your shoes is the story of the midi skirt. And fall 2019 is all for it. So many times I’ve tried to stay on the mini skirt train through Sept. and yes, I look adorbs and yes, I am also freezing at night. A midi is the perfect merger of mini and maxi skirts, as it combines the comfort of the maxi and the flirtness of a mini.
Now batting, is the denim skirt that is about to takeover street style. I found this rare gem last year at a warehouse sale, buried in a cardboard box labeled “smalls.” I got a lot of inquisitive looks the limited times I wore this around campus or out to eat. A denim midi can be mistaken as balloon-y or western but, that was the “2000 and late teen” outlook.
I like to incorporate the wild, wild, west ambiance in a California Gold Rush kinda way. (Levi’s is AMPED to bring this product to market! Bet.) Pair with chestnut brown suede pieces such as fringed boots of any length and a beaded oversized bag. Sprinkle in any kind of gold and stone encrusted jewelry to take Californication to the next level. For tops, I like a warmer color that contrasts the denim like lipstick red.
As for the “balloon-y-ness” the best part of the midi denim skirt is its flair shape! For a pencil shaped person, a denim midi adds a fun curves while, for someone with an apple shape it highlights your hippy edges. An overall home-run! And honestly, America has already exhausted most ways to wear denim so the midi only makes sense.
I love my skirt by Holding Horses (yes, this is a real brand) because it is high waisted so I can bring an otherwise fall piece into the summer and spring with a crop top. With a crop top or tucked in tank, I can show off the waistband pleating and Chapstick-sized pocket. This skirt also works wonders in the winter with a pullover sweater and colored over-the-knee boots!
For a lower risk of striking out, retailers such as Anthropologie, H&M, and Banana Republic have an early 2000s-esque version of the denim midi (Like early, early 2000s before Britney made the denim skirt shorter than shorts). It’s just like the straight line denim mini you’re used to, but to the knee, slitted for wider step gates, and lighter washed, ‘cause like I said it's 00s inspired. Yes, tattered and patchwork are allowed. Embroidery? Proceed with caution, the 90210 cast members (see it is a Cali thing!) were often seem with vines and flowers all down the front of their skirt and though fun denim is in, overdoing it can look super childish.
Finally a skirt that collides comfort and style. Gotta respect the middle man.
