Resortwear by Whit

All the best days are spent in a bathing suit! And you can quote me on that. As the threat of snowy/rainy slush becomes more prevalent, it's only natural for us northerns to want to escape to tropical climates. If you’re so lucky to have an island trip awaiting, as always, I have some outfit recommendations!

Day One Objective: Faking a Tan On the first day of a trip I always opt for my bathing suit with the most coverage and then go skimpier from there as my skin gets more used to the sun. A black bikini and a simple sarong is the classic but best color combo when you’re paste-y.

Vibrant prints, punchy colors, tall heels just ‘cause you can! You are, after all, on vacation! Most people pick a shirt or a dress and then build their outfit around that. I do that sometimes but to keep my creative brain rollin’ I often pick shoes or accessories first. When staying at an all inclusive resort or the like, everything is so close together! This means minimal walking and this also means those shoes that aren’t so comfy but are the cutest can be showcased. Finally! Go for metallic sandals, sweet scallop edged shorts, and a colorful tassel tank.

Day Two-Four Objective: Maximum Beach Time When you finally get that first full day at the pool, hot tub, and/or beach premiere your most trendy suit! For 2024 it's all about whites and brights. I like to mix and match, so I went with a white corset-inspired top and bright bottoms in my favorite shade of purple-y pink!

In terms of fabrics, crochet could not be hotter! Crochet beach bags, purses, cover-ups, and yes, swimwear. On vacation you can be as extra as you want. Don’t just dip a toe in, jump in! The water is warm and there are palm trees everywhere.

And finally, let’s talk about straps! Because believe it or not, the swimwear industry in the US is worth over $20 billion. So yeah, even the more functional elements of a bathing suit have hot and not moments. For 2024 it's all about bows! Big flopping ones, where you tie the bow right on top of your shoulder. Not hidden in the back. This trend is brought to us by the resurgence of nostalgia of course, but also the obsession with all things balletcore. A simple bow detail adds a feminine flourish that is surprisingly grown up.

Nights Two-Four Objective: Island Vibes Think back to first grade art class. Remember those mystery colors that appeared when you mixed the blue and yellow paint or the yellow and red? Well those secondary colors - orange, green, and purple are the best hues to pack for an island trip because they take on bold prints well. When wearing tropical prints I keep my jewelry selections to my core, gold hoops. To take it a level of thoughtfulness further, add in some pearls - the gem of the sea in the form of a pearl pendant or pearl encrusted ring.

Be the island! An ombre maxi dress is lightweight for breezy nights. The shades of soft blue remind me of ocean swims. Resortwear is meant to be floaty and carefree and a little bit louder in vibrant prints!
