One Two-Piece Set Styled Infinite Ways

“Separates” have only been a thing for the last 25 or so years. Before mix-matching was taboo and sets were the only way to go. Sometimes it is good to return to roots if the tree is healthy.

A two piece set, most often consisting of a bitty top and a skirt has been an object of lust for generations. Where have you seen a two piece set before? The now street style ensemble is derived from classic business suiting. Think Chanel’s tweed blazer + skirt suit out of the 1920s. Women in the 1980s workforce also come to mind: big hair, wide lapel jackets, knee-length skirts, and poster child Brooke Shields. In this millennium Britney and Justin brought back the matchy-matchy style with their infamous Canadian tuxedo look. Jewel encrusted cropped tank tops and stick straight pencil skirts became the “it” prom look of 2016 onward.

Head to toe monochromatic takes time to master.

Now two-pieces are designed for the everyday person and the places they may frequent. Let the cropped side-tie top be as risque as the designer had intended, or layer it up to make it appropriate for coffee gatherings, museum going, and desk dressing. Below are eight ways to style my set. Use this as inspiration to try out different styles based off unique pairings of your own garments.

*Hint: you don’t have to wear both pieces together - you can split apart the set. It’s cool, breaks happen.

Outfit Math: Equate the Following Looks

1. Both pieces from the set + lace-up boots + long necklace + curled locks=Trendy Renaissance Woman. The go-to gal.

2. Both pieces from the set + crochet sweater underneath + beret + frilly socks + studded Mary Jane’s=Friend of the French. That would be moi.

3. The maroon top + different color tailored velvet pants + a boatload of pearls=Ruby & Sapphire’s Honeymoon. Awww I’m glad you got to be a part of the velvet jewel’s special moment!

Delicate lace adds class to wherever it may lie.

4. The maroon top + black lace tee + leather mini skirt + plastic bracelets + Vans=Nacho avg sk8er grl. Avril Lavinge approved.

5. The maroon top + camo cargo pants + doc martens + slicked hair= G.I. You. As you were.

6. The velvet skirt + glittery top + moto jacket + heels + diamond earrings=Party Goddess “I don’t believe in the Republican party or the Democratic party. I just believe in parties.” Samantha Jones, we are not worthy!

7. The velvet skirt around the bust as a strapless dress + fur jacket + fun tights (you know the type)=Hotter than Hot Chocolate. Make your ski trip sizzle!

8. The velvet skirt + athletic top underneath + bitty crossbody + cool girl sneakers or slides=The Gym is Not for Me. You could go workout, you’d just rather dress like you do and not deal with the whole sweat thing.

Don’t have a two piece set? Hit your closet before the internet and look for a top or light jacket and skirt or pant that are similar in color and fabric. Odds are you have two identical pieces per coincidence. We are creatures of habit and like what we like. Something fun and cozy like a shearling on shearling is super of the moment! Also, outfits 3-8 don’t even use the full set! If you’ve got a wrap top or a high-waisted midi skirt that’s enough to put together one of these looks!

Hi, fellas! Two piece sets work for men in a corduroy, suede, or of course, denim combo. Don't shy away!

Fashion can be like a game of Go Fish. It’s all about making pairs!
