I always knew I was sure to get a 5 on the writing rubric for openers if I started with a definition. That’ll really hook ‘em in. Groufit; noun, is an all gray outfit, mainly sweats and typically associated with a lack of fashion sense. Though I traditionally write about trendy topics, I figure the groufit is signature enough to the USA look to break tradition and give the all gray sweatsuit a spotlight this week. November 22nd is National Groufit Day for peet’s sake!
Let’s dive into why black and white’s baby, gray is the most iconic sweatsuit pairing. All black everything is nothing new. A loose-fitting black top and baggy black bottoms are simply seen as chic. Black is the ultimate blank canvas for accessories. All white is a rich Hamptons gal look that is seen way less often than black on black. Very few dare to wear all white, in the fear of getting stained, therefore, if you’re gonna brave all white (We love a white linen suit and cork shoes.) you need to have access to elite laundry services. Gray is the middle ground. It’s dull in color, easily stain treatable, and pairs well with gold and silver if you want to get icy. Gray matches all and yet we decided to wear it with just more gray?
Gray is seen as a sober color. No one wants to go gray. If you don’t treat your gray hairs it is seen as lazy. This makes gray casual and ideal for lounging. You’re more likely to catch someone in a groufit on their couch, running an errand near their house and less likely on an adventurous trip. I, obviously, like to challenge the norm. Sometimes groufits are just convenient and there is nothing more to it than that.
Gray will be an important color for the remainder of 2022 because it is dismal. It is punk. If you want to join me in the movement to make the groufit cool, start with colorful shoes. We recognize that every color has its limitations. In the name of pop punk, reach for purple boots with a black tread. Pant legs can be tucked into the tip top of mid-calf boots to highlight a baggy balloon shape that somehow makes the legs look more slender and cutting-edge. As the sun is slowly coming into the picture, reach for a cropped tank over a sweatshirt. This accomplishes two things. One: slimming down an oversized look and two: a basic ribbed tank a white or gray is 100% vital to your summer 2022 style. Everyone has already been inspired by Prada’s little logo tank. I advise adapting.
Gray is plain. If you think about it, gray is rarely included in prints and patterns. Gray is solid. Merge the gap between sweatsuit and pantsuit with loosely tailored gray separates. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. A gray knit sweatshirt with a collar instead of a quarter zip is perfect for Spring morning and Summer nights. Gray sweatpants with a seam down the middle to resemble a pant crease are genius. Not sure how it took designers so long to invent this.
