Elevated Athleisure

7th Heaven

The appearance that you just came from spin class has been in for years however, no one’s really done a deep dive into how to accomplish such sporty inspired chic. Hint: there is more to it than simply wearing mesh while not in a sweat session. Today we conquer wearing basketball shorts not for street ball but, as street style; among other tips. Enjoy!

The basic principle of amping up the cool factor of your home gym ensemble is mixing athletic gear with elevated closet staples. First I made a list of core fashion items and staple workout clothing. Then I whipped up three looks that combine splashes of both.

Oversized Sweatshirt + Silk Skirt: There is nothing better than cozying up under an old worn-in crewneck sweatshirt so um, why not wear that bad boy in public? Since most of my sweatshirts are in fact super old and faded I flip them inside out for a solid look like the celebs wear. (Be sure to clip the tag!) With the fuzz side out, the sweatshirt adds texture against a sleek, silk skirt. Choose a midi or ankle grazing length.

Dress like a football player and a cheerleader all in one look.

A mini skirt would get lost under the baggy sweatshirt’s low hem. Anytime I wear something baggy I avoid looking pregnant by adding on at least a two-inch heel to slim my legs. This time I kick back with slingback sunny yellow wedges. Perfect for a shaded brunch!

I've got the power.

Running Shorts + Cardigan: Kinda cute but comfortable is the vibe I put out every weekend at the grocery when I sport running shorts, flip flops, and wait for it: a buttoned up cardigan. I love the loudness of the colors and typefaces in brands like Nike and Under Armour. Attention isn’t automatically given; you have to demand it. Running shorts are JV level. For daring varsity tryouts, go for three in baggy, large mesh whole, basketball shorts. Up top by merely swapping a t-shirt for a sleek neutral tone cardigan, you earn fashion points. People don’t think you’re wearing gym shorts and flip-flops out of laziness or convenience when you wear so purposefully with a chain bag and a short length cardigan as a shirt. Not into the cardi thing? A plain ‘ol ironed button down sends the same message. When in the frozen foods section add a quilted varsity jacket over top. This should seem obvious - sliding into a clearly sports inspired fashion piece however, at this point, it seems a little ironic. Don’t you think?

Yoga Set + Mesh Top or Wrap Top: Yoga pants have had their heyday. Somehow I always step on my pant leg during downward therefore, I have found leggings to be much more practical on and off the mat. Make it fashion by choosing a fun floral, palm leaf, or geometric print with a matching sports bra. Sets are everything, everywhere, and on everyone this fall season.

Skip the cleats and warmup jacket. A cardigan and platforms are just sooo much cuter!

When out of the studio layer a wrap top over the printed sports bra. Anything with ties reminds most of us of the P.E. staple, sneakers. But actually, a wrap side tie mini top nods to warm-up gear worn by ballerinas. Trading a wrap top for a mesh one switches the otherwise Pilates class look, into football scrimmage ready. I’m game! For cooler nights (i.e. any day that is not 90 degrees) finish with a cozy cardigan and heels for oomf. Picking accessories carefully in coordinating colors is key to the daunting task of mixing formalities.

Shelby makes pigtails adult by wearing tight on top of her head. Finish with a curl for wow factor.

The Real MVP: I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: shoes hold the power! Not only do shoes ground you they also give you shape. When wearing mainly workout style clothing, look put together by adding more formal heels or sandals. Thick gym socks under a glamorous t-strap kitten heel is a best of both worlds combo. Test it out and own it!
